Violet Johnson Opens Spa to Battered Women

Violet J Spa opens to battered women

Once a year Violet Johnson opens her business on Lincoln Avenue to women from different organizations for a day of pampering. It might be organizations such as the Cancer Society or the family shelter, but Violet and her husband, employees and friends join together to offer women a day to get a massage, have their haircut and make-up done. This year on Aug. 25, eight women from the battered women’s shelter were invited to Violet’s spa at 1345 Lincoln Avenue.

“The first year, we invited blind women,” Violet said, “we did their make-up and wrote out instructions in Braille.” This is the fourteenth year Violet has opened up her business and she gets a lot of pleasure out of helping others and it was also something that she grew up with and was encouraged to do by her family. “It just makes sense,” she adds, “to give back to the community that’s been so good to you. Besides, I feel that women should be giving back to women. We rely on our community for income,” she said.

“It’s not enough just getting touched. Touching makes us feel great. It provides energy and wellness. When we’re feeling good and looking good, things seem a lot better and it gives us more confidence.”

Most of the women invited to be pampered are getting ready to go back to work. “These are women who’ve been hiding from abusive partners. They are now preparing to go back into the world. Most will get a mini facial, neck and shoulder massage and lessons in make up and skin care along with products,” Violet said.

Helping Violet prepare these women to re-emerge with confidence were three first-timers and Violet’s husband William Johnson. Janice Charles is a hair stylist who has been a volunteer all her life. She works at Velvet Waves in Campbell. Maria Chang is one of Violet’s clients. She has her own professional make-up business.”One day Violet was telling me about the volunteer work and I wanted to help out. I have my own company-Professional Make-Up Artistry-and I specialize in brides,” Maria said. Monique Garcia is a massage therapist who works for Violet, but decided to spend her day off helping other women relax.William Johnson is a retired pilot. He helps with facials, massages and spa services and is not above going out to buy drinks and sandwiches to make the ladies feel at home.
